2-Chloropropionic Acid

2-chloropropionic acid is a pale liquid with a slight odor and is the simplest chiral chlorocarboxylic acid.

The formula of 2-Chloropropionic acid is CH3CHClCO2H. It is produced by chlorination of propionyl chloride followed by hydrolysis of the 2-chloropropionyl chloride. It should be handled with care because 2-Chloropropionic acid is a neurotoxin.

2-Chloropropionyl chloride reacts with isobutylbenzene to give ibuprofen after hydrolysis.

2-Chloropropionic acid is used as an intermediate in the agricultural, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
